The Club History

The Atherton International Club’s journey began in 1976, sparked by Pietro Cuda’s visit to the Parramatta Italian Club. Upon returning to Atherton, Pietro and his card-playing friends, including local barber Sam Valastro, rallied the community. On July 1st, 1976, 40 people gathered at the Atherton Hotel to form a club that would celebrate cultural diversity, known today as ‘The Atherton International Club’.

A dedicated committee, including local leaders Sam Curcio (the first president), Phillip Cuda, and Tony Turchetti, laid the foundation by securing 7 acres of land and constructing the first clubhouse in 1978. Much of the early work was done by volunteers, with builder Ben Pozzebon leading the construction effort. The first event—a wedding, hosted by the Ladies Committee, led by Mrs. Pat Chaffier—was a resounding success, marking the start of many community events.

Under Frank Gallo’s presidency, the club expanded, adding a major function hall to accommodate the increasing demand for events. Over the years, cricket, soccer, and touch football thrived at the club, thanks to the support of locals like Mr. Loccisano and the Raso family, who donated additional land for sports fields.

Facing Government funding cuts in the 1990s, the club, led by Frank Gallo, Phillip Cuda, and John Clare, diversified the business, introducing gaming and entertainment for members, this played a crucial role in securing the club’s future. In recent years, under the leadership of Terry Clark, John Wilkinson and Joe Barletta Jr., the club has undergone significant renovations and improvements, continuing to serve as a community hub for sports and social events.
